I decided to go out to the driving range today during my lunch hour and I was treated to watching one of my biggest pet peeves. A father / husband / boyfriend trying to teach the golf swing to a daughter / son / girlfriend / wife. You will notice that it is always a male inflicting this damage upon some form of a significant other. For some reason, women do not do this, only the men. And there is no way they will listen to any advice about the damage they are doing. They always know better.

Today’s victim was a boy of about 6 years old with what I will assume to be his father. It wasn’t the worst case of “teaching” that I have ever seen, but it was definitely a typical case of golf lessons by someone who has no business doing this.

The way these lessons typically go is that the “teacher” gives about 10-20 pieces of horrible advice in the span of 30 minutes and gets very angry when their victim cannot execute all of the conflicting swing tips that they have just received. And the worst part is that they are always missing the most obvious things that their victim should be working on. They start focusing on all of these weird positions that they think their victim should be getting their body and golf club into and don’t realize that no human alive can do what they are asking (or should try and do).

This past weekend I bought a pair of tickets to the 2012 US Open at Olympic Club in Daly City, California. I had tried to get tickets to previous US Opens but had never been selected in the drawing. This year the USGA switched to a first come first serve system so I was finally able to secure the tickets to my first US Open.
I also may have the opportunity to attend the 2012 Masters as well, so I thought it would be funny to check and see if the PGA Championship was nearby and maybe I could hit 3 out of 4 majors in the same year. Sadly the 2011 PGA Championship is at the Atlantic Athletic Club so I think one trip to Georgia in a year is enough for me (I will probably have just gotten rid of the cockroaches that hitched a ride back from the first trip so I don't want to return and bring back more). So I investigated further to see when the next PGA Championship would be on the west coast.
    • 2012 it is in South Carolina at Kiawah Island Resort.
    • 2013 is at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York.
    • 2014 returns to Valhalla in Kentucky.
    • 2015 heads back to Whistling Straights in Kohler, Wisconsin for the third time in 11 years (I have actually played this golf course and it was nice, but am really surprised that the PGA keeps returning as often as they are).
    • 2016 is at Baltrustrol in Springfield, New Jersey.
    • 2017 heads to North Carolina to Quail Hollow club
    • 2018 is at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri.
So the next eight PGA championships don't come anywhere near my side of the country..................

I didn't grow up as a golfer. In fact, I never played golf until after the age of 21. I did play other sports as a kid though. Baseball, Basketball, Football, Soccer and a little Wrestling mixed in for a few years (without a doubt my least favorite sport that I played and I am not sure why I did it). With the exception of the Wrestling, all of these sports were team activities. Golf is most definitely an individual sport. While it can be played as a team game, it is just not the same as the other team sports I played in my past. There was always something missing but I could just not put my hand on what that was.

I recently read a blog and I started to ask myself, why is there not more butt slapping in golf? There are plenty of opportunities for it. Nailing a birdie putt. Crushing a drive. Making a great par save. Any one of these events say "smack my ***", but it never happens. You only get knuckle bumps or high fives. Why not a friendly pat on the bottom instead?

Imagine this scenario. Tiger Woods at the 2005 Masters, hole number 16.

The Magnificent 7 Ways To Improve Your Game

Hey all, check this out... A question that golf teachers get asked all the time is what one thing a golfer can do to lower scores. Actually one of my favorite questions because I'm not big on instant gratification or quick fixes, but developing a game that can withstand the different pressures from the golf course. With that said, here are the seven ways you golf addicts out there can lower scores and beat the heck out of your friends. Here's a couple tips we came up with, you can...

The quest to improve my putting

Putting is the worst part of my game. Well, not all of my putting is bad. But the closer I get to the hole, the worse I get. Missing multiple three and four footers during a round is very demoralizing and when I walk off the course after a round where this has happened, I am always left wondering what if? But now I am determined to fix this. Last week the cure to my putting woes arrived in the mail. It is the Putting Fork putting training aid. It is every bit as tough as advertised and...

Best Golf Courses To Play in the Northwest Washington Area For Under $50

Few of the tens of millions of passionate golfers around this fine nation are aware of the golfing paradise that is tucked into the Northwestern corner of the country, and that's just fine with Washingtonians. Many residents of the Apple State are perfectly happy with the slow pace of life and the spread-out landscapes that dominate much of the region. A far as golf is concerned, the city of Seattle and the surrounding areas are home to some of the most naturally beautiful courses in all of...

But did he get up and down?

FLI85 He was hitting to a two tiered green at The Links at Galloway in Memphis, TN. He did manage to get it on the green but was on the wrong tier and carded a double (not counting the two strokes for grounding his club in the hazard). And he carded a bath and infamy on the internet.

Golf Scariest Shots & How To Play Them

This week the PGA Tour makes its stop at the TPC Sawgrass for The Players Championship and ultimately you see shots like this approach the infamous 17th island green: AMHs_Q2GRm8&w The 17th at TPC Sawgrass swallows up about 175,000 golf balls per year because honestly it's hit the green or die. Hitting shots like this into holes that are surrounded by disaster are nothing new but scare the daylights out of most golfers. Why? Well they are thinking more about the trouble surrounding...

Fowler - Bubba win spurred me on

Rickie Fowler says the success of close friend Bubba Watson at the Masters in April gave him the extra motivation to finally push on and win his first PGA Tour event. The 23-year-old burst onto the scene in 2009 but despite a number of close calls, he repeatedly failed to win his first PGA Tour event before he finally broke his duck by birdieing the first play-off hole at the recent Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow in North Carolina. The victory came less than a month after Watson...

McIlroy predicts tough 2012 US Open

Rory McIlroy stunned the golfing world with a phenomenal performance to win the US Open at Congressional, last year, but the Northern Irishman is expecting a much stiffer challenge in the 2012 running of the tournament. The 22-year-old set the world alight in Washington, 12 months ago, as he broke record after record on his way to finishing on 16-under par, and a massive eight shots clear of the chasing pack. McIlroy is already a favourite bet at Bet Victor. In 2012, the tournament will...

    Golf Shot Making & Fear

Hey Everyone, coming at you again with another awesome blog post. You can see the post in its entirety on crossgolfpros.blogspot.com Here's an excerpt: Is it that buried lie in the bunker? What about that ball resting in front of the giant oak tree? Oh I know a lot of people get scared of that par-3 carry over the water, do you? Recently, I did a Google Search with the search terms, "biggest fears, high handicap golfers." The number one thing that came up was bunker shots. In...
